Cyb & Cicadas: Sandwich Eater Chronicles

There’s something about superstar sightings. They’re fun, right?

I remember my first, the day I was at the grocery with my mom and ran into my 3d grade teacher, Miss Lewis. For whom, I might add, I had a deep but unrequited crush.

Seeing her was so out of context. I couldn’t think straight. She was a celebrity to me.

“Miss Lewis, what are you doing here?”

She smiled I’m sure, though, so smitten was I and flustered, I didn’t notice.

“Why, Chuck, I’m buying groceries. Just like you and your mother.”

If you are in New York or L A, you’re always going to see somebody with fame. Like running into Harry Morgan (Col. Ducks on Asphalt: The Sandwich Eater Chronicles

The dressed-in-black ladies who work at the salon across the way will be sauntering to work, far more coiffed than one would expect at that time of day. Read the rest of this entry »

The Sandwich Eater Chronicles: An Intro

One of the things I like best about being a sandwich guy is that consumption of same doesn’t take full attention.

You can pick it up from the plate or paper wrapping and get it to your mouth without looking or any unnecessary decision making. Which allows one to observe the goings on around him or her while eating. Unlike, say, if you’ve ordered a veggie plate at, say, Lynn’s Paradise Cafe, and have four cups to choose from before each bite.

It’s hard to be an observer of the passing scene while simultaneously deciding between a bite of lima beans or mac and cheese. Your attention might be momentarily diverted from the conversation at the next booth upon which you are eavesdropping. If you’re doing a Highlander — a Lynn’s sandwich fave of mine — you can grab, lift and munch while still paying attention to somebody named Maryann in the next booth prattling on about problems with her boss.

Which explanation for being a lifelong sandwich guy — Thank you, Earl — may be a clever intro, but is, in fact, a ruse. Read the rest of this entry »
