Tiny Treasures & Turkey Triage: Sandwich Eater Chronicle

Renewed sources of inspiration are always a good thing.

When the words of encouragement are scrawled in chalk on pavement in the park, they are especially invigorating and delightful.

This is not the first time this same anonymous guru has chosen the Cherokee Park Loop to pass along motivational nuggets. A year or two ago, the muse struck in the same place. Using the same colored chalk in the same hand.

The uplifting words I remember from this morning’s encounter while jogging.

“A hug can heal.”

“Your heart is Lovely.”

“If you believe it, you can achieve it.”

“You’re wonderful.”

“Look towards the future, don’t regress.”

And one writ at one end of the Baringer Hill path that cuts through the woods from Eastern Parkway to the rugby/frisbee field: “Try Another Path.” Clever. Cute.

To whomever this mysterious sage may be, thanks. Long may you run.

Silly me. I thought Funmi’s Cafe was closed.

Turns out that, at some point, it moved from a spot with no parking along Bardstown Road to the Gardiner Lane Shopping Center. You can find the eatery in that little alcove next to Buckhead.

Shame on me for not getting the sweet proprietress’s name. Hers is an endearing smile. I do know she’s the older sister of Muhammed Lasege, the former U of L Cardinal hoopster, who is now a Wharton Business School grad, working as an exec for Exxon in Dallas.

Anyway, the cafe features modern Nigerian cuisine. Like the facility itself, it simple and with good taste.

The other day I had sauteed tilapia with collard greens and plantains. Mmmmmmmmm. My buddy had goat stew. Which he liked a lot. He should know. He’s spent some time in Africa.

Not that such a sojourn is necessary to appreciate this food. It is not nearly as exotic as you might expect. Just a might different, something new for your palate. Here’s a link to the menu.

The place is open for lunch and dinner

Perhaps it’s the clever name that caught my attention: “Turkey Triage.”

Anyway for those suffering kitchen panic Thanksgving morning, WFPL 89.3 will be there like EMS for the rescue. Starting at 11:00, there’s a two hour call-in show to help you through any Turkey Day cooking snafus.

Wouldn’t want that green bean casserole too runny now, would we?
